Privacy matters more than ever in today’s digital world. Many tools and apps collect data without users fully realizing it. MOCKU, a Chrome extension designed for capturing screenshots and videos, takes a different approach. It puts privacy at the heart of its design. This post explains how MOCKU protects your privacy, what data it handles, and why it needs certain permissions. If you want a clear, trustworthy tool that respects your privacy, this is for you.

MOCKU’s Privacy Philosophy

MOCKU is built on a simple but powerful idea: privacy is not just a feature, it is the architecture. Unlike many tools that send your data to servers or third parties, MOCKU keeps everything local. This means:

  • No data leaves your device

All screenshots, video recordings, and final files stay on your computer. Nothing is uploaded or shared.

  • Local-first design

MOCKU uses your browser’s native capabilities to capture, process, and save media. This avoids external servers or cloud services.

  • User control at all times

You decide what to capture and save. MOCKU does not track or store any information about your activity.

This approach ensures your privacy is protected by design, not just by promises.

How MOCKU Handles Your Data

MOCKU processes all capturing and encoding inside your browser. Here is what happens step-by-step:

  • When you start a video recording, MOCKU uses Chrome’s tabCapture API to grab the content of the active tab.

  • The video data is encoded into MP4 format using local WebCodecs, a browser-native technology. This means encoding happens on your device, not on a server.

  • For screenshots, MOCKU uses the activeTab permission to capture the visible content of the tab.

  • When you finish, the extension uses the downloads API to save the final file directly to your machine.

At no point does MOCKU send your screenshots, videos, or any other data to external servers. This local processing keeps your information private and secure.

No Tracking or Analytics

MOCKU does not collect any analytics or user data. There are:

  • No tracking pixels embedded in the extension

  • No user accounts or login systems

  • No data sent back to the developer or third parties

This means MOCKU does not know who you are, what you capture, or how you use the extension. Your privacy is fully respected.

Why MOCKU Needs Specific Permissions

To provide its features, MOCKU requests three key permissions. Here’s why each is necessary, explained simply:

  • tabCapture

This permission allows MOCKU to record video of the active browser tab. Without it, video capture would not be possible.

  • activeTab

This lets MOCKU take screenshots of the current tab. It only activates when you use the screenshot feature, ensuring minimal access.

  • downloads

MOCKU needs this to save your captured screenshots and videos to your device. It does not upload or share these files.

Each permission is limited in scope and used only for its intended purpose. MOCKU does not request unnecessary access.

Transparency and Independent Development

MOCKU was created by an independent developer who faced the same privacy concerns many users have. The goal was to build a tool that solves a real problem without compromising privacy. This means:

  • The extension is developed openly with privacy as a priority.

  • There is no hidden data collection or tracking.

  • Users can trust that their data stays on their device.

This transparency reflects a commitment to respect users and build tools that serve their needs honestly.
